UNICEF has now issued a Request for Proposals in order to select a service provider to conduct the Study on The Cost of Inaction on Child Wasting: Global and Regional Estimates of Health, Human Capital and Economic Losses. The overall purpose of the assignment is to develop global and regional estimates of the health, human capital, and economic costs of inaction on the prevention and management of wasting among children under five years of age. These dimensions (health, human capital and economic) represent the minimum scope of the analysis; however, prospective consultancy agencies are encouraged to propose alternative or additional approaches in their technical proposals, where they add value. The analysis will estimate the consequences of failing to adequately prevent and manage wasting and nutritional oedema compared with maintaining current trajectories. This will be achieved by quantifying, at a minimum: The human capital and economic costs associated with child mortality, including the loss of future workforce productivity; The human capital and economic costs of productivity losses among children who survive wasting; The health system costs incurred for the treatment of children affected by wasting The analysis will provide decision-makers with evidence on the health, human capital, and economic costs of inaction to support advocacy for children's right to survival, good health and nutrition, resource mobilization, domestic financing, donor engagement, policy prioritization, and programme scale-up The findings will provide UNICEF and partners with evidence to strengthen global and regional advocacy, support investment cases for child nutrition, inform policy dialogue and resource mobilization, and guide prioritization of interventions aimed at preventing and managing child wasting.
